FOR SALE: Contax N Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 70-200mm f/3.5-4.5 lens, converted by Conurus to EOS mount, thereby providing full autofocus, auto-exposure and EXIF data functionality. (For further details of the conversion, please see below.)
CONDITION/USE: Excellent++, with lens caps, case, instructions and original box.
PRICE: £595, including shipping within the UK.
REASON FOR SALE: I am primarily a landscape photographer, and I now restrict the weight that I carry on day-long mountain walks to a 5D MkII with Contax Zeiss 35-70mm, and a 21mm Olympus Zuiko for wider shots. I have therefore decided to sell my Contax 70-200mm N f/3.5-4.5, adapted by Conurus for Canon EOS use.
PAYMENT METHODS: Bank transfer, cleared cheque, or cash on collection. I would also accept PayPal, but in this case the PayPal fees of £21 would be charged in addition to the £595, bringing the total price to £620.
METHOD OF CONTACT: PM. Please include your phone or mobile number if you would like me to call you to run through any points.
VIEWING PRIOR TO PURCHASE: I live on the Lancashire/Cumbria border, and would be more than happy for potential buyers to come to inspect the extender before purchase.
FEEDBACK: I can provide a link to my eBay feedback, which is currently 637 (including feedback on the sale of used Canon 5D Mk I, a Canon focusing screen, and a Sigma 12-24mm lens), with 100% positive feedback over the last 12 months.
Conurus Contax Conversions
Conurus is a Canadian lens interface expert, based in Vancouver, which offers the unique service of converting Contax N lenses for use with Canon EOS cameras. Converted lenses have full auto focus, auto exposure and EXIF data functionality. The only difference between the converted lens and an original Canon lens is that the converted lens has the legendary Zeiss glass, which imparts the unique Zeiss "feel" to the images that it produces.
Conurus will convert the Vario-Sonnar 70-200/3.5-4.5 for C$399. They estimate that it takes around 6 months, from the time a customer ships a lens to them to the time the customer receives it back. Furthermore, at present there is a shortage of parts, and Conurus appears not to be taking orders for conversions.
If shipping from the UK or the rest of the EU, you would need to go through various customs formalities in order to avoid paying duty on the entire value of the lens when it comes back through UK / EU customs. In addition, there are duty issues if the lens is shipped from, and back to, Europe. The conversion process is therefore problematic for European customers.
In the past, Conurus has also converted and sold lenses that they have sourced themselves, and the lens that I am now selling was purchased in this way. Their standards are high. As they state on their web site: "Unless otherwise noted these lenses are in excellent condition or better. That means we cannot find dust, fungus or dirt inside the glass during our visual inspection, and we cannot find any dents, cracks or other major cosmetic detractions on the exterior. As used lenses, you may find some minimal signs of use, but nothing excessive. We know Contax autofocus lenses best and each lens we sell undergoes more thorough functionality testing than any other vendor in the world. We take the time to screen our stock and sell you only quality lenses." At present, no converted lenses are available for sale.
