RARE 1965 Winchester Model 70, 24" Heavy Barrel, chambered in .225 Winchester - this rifle C&R eligible! - Burbank / Los Angeles Area.
Very good condition, with the majority of the blue and finish remaining, but shows some areas of light thinning as can be seen in the photos; no pitting or rust/corrosion. The bluing is thin around the bolt handle knob, and a couple of areas on the barrel forward of the stock's nose and some mottling at the muzzle.
The bore is bright, with some signs of minor use. Essentially a varmint rifle chambered in the very rare .225 Winchester, with its original checkered walnut stock. The stock is an oiled satin/flat finish, with some minor storage dings or scrapes as can be seen in the photos.
The action is like most early Winchesters, as smooth as butter and rolls easily through its cycle. Trigger is excellent.
The barrel is marked with a WP proofing rollmark on top, and MADE IN U.S.A. - WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL - WINCHESTER MODEL - 70 - .225 WIN. ' on the side.
Gun value guides indicate that Model 70's chambered in .225 Winchester, bear a 50% premium over standard calibers. Very few were made and it was only available from 1964 - 1971.
The .225 Winchester cartridge is the one of the most accurate factory developed cartridges of all time, yet was made sparingly. Ammo can still be found or you can really get into loading your own which is exceptional for this cartridge to really maximize its capability. Reloading dies for the round are readily available.
