The "Ermeto" case design was developed and patented in 1926 by the Huguenin Freres of Le Locle, Switzerland. The design called for a rectangular "hermetic" casing around a watch module, which could open and close to view the dial and also to "automatically" wind the watch each time the case was opened and closed. The Ermeto was marketed aggressively by Movado beginning in 1927, and was a huge success. Ermetos were manufactured in four different sizes in a variety of metal cases and coverings, including gold, silver, enamel and reptile skins. Here's a rare and beautiful Ermeto Chronometre in .935 sterling silver with gold inlaid horizontal stripes. Charles-Antoine LeCoultre established the watchmaking firm that bears his name in 1833 in the Joux Valley of Switzerland. In 1925 LeCoultre merged with the Jaeger Company to form Jaeger-LeCoultre. Here is a beautiful early vintage LeCoultre with signed A. LeCoultre 15 jewel movement and gorgeous two-tone dial. LeCOULTRE - 35x39mm signed stainless steel snapback case with gold finished bezel and lugs, signed A. LeCoultre 15 jewel Swiss movement, excellent two-tone gold mirrored dial with full arabic numerals, blued steel stick hands and subsidiary seconds at 6:00, fixed lugs with 19mm nylon strap. The case on this early vintage LeCoultre is signed on the inner case back ("LeCoultre Co., Swiss"). The thin gold finish is substantially worn on the bezel and lugs. The 15 jewel Swiss movement is signed A. LeCoultre, and is also marked "Wm. E. Phillips Co., Unadjusted" in very light hand script. The movement is running and keeping good time, but no doubt would benefit from standard servicing. The two-tone gold mirror dial appears almost too good not to be a refinish, but if it is, the LeCoultre signature is the best I've ever seen. It may well be original, as might be the crown. The wire lugs clearly identify this watch as an early vintage piece, perhaps from the early 1930's. The "A. LeCoultre" signature on the movement, as well as the use of 15, rather than 17, jewels also dates the piece to that era. At 35mm, this was a rather large watch at that time, and the large dial with small bezel makes it appear even larger. VERY EARLY VINTAGE TWO-TONE LeCOULTRE WITH BEAUTIFUL GOLD MIRROR DIAL AND 15 JEWEL A. LeCOULTRE MOVEMENT! Sell for $795 plus shipping ($15 US Delivery or $60 International via Global Express).
