Here is a rare find for those fascinated by the history of Chinese watchmaking. When I first received the watch, I asked the experts on /72 for their input, and here's the old thread...
(Blush) maybe bought a non-Franken-Gull for its pretty face
In summary, the case and dial were probably built for the never-(mass)produced ST7 automatic movement, which they intended to make as a competitor to high-end Swiss watches. The dial says "29 Jewels" which refers to the ST7 movement (There was also a 28 jewel ST5 automatic with date). They made perhaps a hundred ST7 prototype movements, and one can find those watches *rarely* for around $1000. When they realized these would cost too much to build, they filled the extra cases with other movements and sold them off.
I bought this watch in November 2011 from a seller in Poland who had found it in an estate. Service history is unknown but it runs extremely well, smooth winding and good timekeeping (not measured recently).
Very clean steel case, radial brushed top, a few swirlies visible on polished sides, original box-dome acrylic crystal is in excellent condition, with internal cyclops for date. Signed crown and logo on rear screw-back. Rear has a very light scratch (probably from removing the cover for service or sales photo.)
Cushion case measures 36mm wide, 42mm lug-lug, 12mm thick, 18mm lug width. Currently using a 18mm Timex Zulu strap, which I will happily include if you want it. I rarely wear the watch - it's basically a box queen among my vintage curiosities. I wind it a bit every month or two to keep the lube happy.
I prefer to ship only in north America, but I'm flexible if you are. Selling as-is. I promise I am describing full known condition. Price includes Paypal fees and shipping USA/Canada first class un-insured. (If you want special or overseas shipping we can discuss extra costs.) I have purchased and sold many watches as “skywatch” on WUS, with good feedback. Thanks! - Robert
